While many people associate being underweight with welfare problems, a pony that is overweight can actually be at even greater risk of serious long-term health problems.

Sara Cox urges owners to keep their ponies active

Sara, best known for her broadcasting work, took some time while on a riding visit to Dartmoor with Liberty Trails to record a short video promoting the value of exercise in keeping ponies healthy.

“It might seem obvious but keep your ponies moving so that they don’t get overweight.

“I know you love your horses and you want to give them treats, rug them up and cuddle them up, but they’re hardy creatures.

“If they’ve got room to move, that’s the best thing for your ponies. If you don’t, they might get a little bit podgy like we all can!

“You don’t want health problems to occur like laminitis which is horrific as we all know.”
