Jimmy understands the need for good handling skills. His grandfather had studied equine handling in Guatemala City and had applied it back home. Sadly, he died when Jimmy´s father, Francisco, was young and although some of his knowledge was passed on to his family much of expertise was lost.
How has our project helped?
Jimmy and Francisco were keen to learn, they joined the group of 8 farrier students to improve their farriery and handling skills. In fact he became an expert in handling nervous horses.
With World Horse Welfare’s revolving fund scheme, Jimmy and Francisco were able to set up Solares – a professional farriery workshop.
The farriery shop has been a resounding success, each month trimming and shoeing around 30 horses from the local communities. There is no doubt that this thriving business is improving the lives, capabilities and welfare of working equids who support the local economy of Mancheren.
